The Liminal

This photo shows me in the red scarf and a couple of fellow travelers crossing the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge in Northern Ireland in 2012.
If you didn't know me you would think that my smile in this photo was an expression of fun and enjoyment. However I am terrified of heights of any kind, let alone ones where I am suspended on what appears to be an extremely shaky bridge made of rope!
This week I explored the liminal learning space and thought that this picture helped to represent it. On either side of the bridge is solid ground which represents the knowledge and understanding before (pre-liminal), during (liminal) and after entering the liminal space (post-liminal).
The rope bridge represents leaving that safety of current learning and entering an area of 'discomfort' in order to reach the new understanding (the other side) or post-liminal stage.
Learning is not always easy and comfortable and understanding this liminal space has really been an AHA moment for me as an educator.
Some learning also requires a person to leave something behind in order to be able to reach the other side.
In my case, I left behind my fears and insecurities and painted a smile on my face!
